Who would convey your wishes if you were unable to?
A Living Will is an Advance Decision or Advance Medical Directive.
You may be admitted to hospital, unconscious and unable to make an informed decision. Normally, treatment would be given with your consent. If your family members are unaware of your wishes any medical treatment will be given according to your ‘best interests’.
An Advance Decision is a set of instructions which provides information regarding the level of medical treatment you would care to receive or refuse should you become unable to convey your wishes. This could relate to decisions regarding blood transfusions, amputations or terminal illness.
Your Advance Decision will only come into force when you are unable to make decisions about your care.
